Lubana History and today

History

According to British records 33% of the Labana were baptised Sikhs and were found primarily in the Lahore, Gujranwala, and Sialkot areas. The Labanas (along with many other groups) saw the highest conversions into Sikhism during 1881 1891.

According to George Armand Furse, “The Jut and Lobana castes of Sikhs possess in a high degree the useful knowledge of the lading and care of beasts of burden”.

Origin

The name Laban may refer to the transport of salt. “The term Labana appears to be derived out from loon (salt) and bana means trade, and the lubana, Lobana or libana was doubtless the great salt-carrying and salt trading caste”.

Acc. to Gurmat Parkash, Magazine by SGPC, Lobana also means who wear Iron Dress, i.e dress of Military person. They mentioned Lobana were Military persons who served in Guru’s army.

These are also called Bahrupia, on account of their versatility in adopting many professions.

Labanki, the dialect of Labanas, is a mixture of Marwari, Saraiki, Gujarati, and Marathi.

Role in Sikh History

After Guru Harkrishan, the eighth Guru of Sikhism, died in 1664, there was confusion about the identification of his successor. According to Sikh legends, Makhan Shah, a great merchant of the Labana tribe, identified Guru Teg Bahadur as the successor of Guru Harkrishan. Makhan Shah was very helpful to Guru Teg Bahadur during his pontificate. The Labanas participated in battles fought by the tenth Guru.

During the Misl period , the Labanas joined the services of various “Misldars”.

During the eighteenth century the Labanas began to follow a settled way of life. The Labanas of Lower Indus, Gujranwala and Jhang, settled as cultivators during Sikh rule.

Wherever the Labanas settled they named their villages as Tandas. Tanda in Labanki dialect means a travelling body encampment. In Kangra district, the Lobanas had four hamlets, each called Tanda. By the mid-nineteenth century, the Lobanas at some places owned not only parts of villages, but also entire villages and even groups of villages. They were chiefly found in the Punjab during the Sikh rule.

Labanas were listed as a martial race by the British.

Labanas are said to have nomadic roots but are not related to the Lambada or Labada tribe of Andhra. There are some who believe that they are of the same stock as the Gypsies or Roma people of Europe. Labanas have been linked with Gypsies from Turkey.

Labanas today

Today Labana is a landholding-rich community of Punjab. A large number of Labanas are settled abroad in western countries. The people are hard-working and uplifted the community again to its pride, which was in crisis during the early years of partition. Most Sikh Labanas are of western Punjab origin (now in Pakistan) and are called Panahi, while a smaller ratio are of East Punjab origin and are called Jaddi.

  1. It is very important to understand your lineage for genes pass down to many many generations. It is equally hearting to know that Lubanas were from lineage of great traders who had exceptional business acumen, dedicated Sikhs who always remain in sharan of the Great Sikh Gurus, were great warriors and remained in the fore front for any type of sacrifice and also remained in the service of the Gurus throughout the course of the history. There were many lubana Sikhs in the army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Many of them were on coveted positions like generals. During reign of Maharajah Ranjit Singh they were allotted agricultural land and since then they took to farming particularly in Gujranwala Sialkot districts of undivided Punjab. After partition in 1947 many lubana families suffered a lot when they had to leave every of their possessions in Pakistan and move to divided India and divided Punjab. Many suffered in financially because land they got in exchange was much less and was of lower fertility. Sant Prem Singh wanted to help lubana community which had suffered huge losses by getting it included in OBC. I know many people criticise his great effort. You take a stock of current situation in the country many castes including jatts in Haryana Rajasthan and many other states are holding agitations to get OBC status. That again shows great long term vision of our ancestors. It is not much important whether we want to remain OBC or not as most of the lubanas have regained their past glory of Baba Makhan Shah era. Strategically I don’t find any problem if some of our brethren who were not able to make by now take advantage of it and reach to higher level of prosperity. Waheguru ji da Khalsa Waheguru ji di Fateh.

      1. Hii bro,
Lubana, Vanjara, Rathore, and Parmar all belong to #RAJPUT race.
If you have any doubt just watch these 2 videos of Dr. Sukhpreet Singh Udoke on the basis of historical books and pieces of evidence.

        1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fDfrDx9rtk&t=2837s Watch full video 36:00 and admit Lubana are Rajputs.
        2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWDXJ1HPRh8&t=728s Watch the full video.

        3) We also have evidence in #Pakistan, just go to your FB search box and type Lubana Rajput,
You can get so many Lubanas ID in Pakistan who belongs to #Muslim #Rajput families.
        4) One thing more Lubana and Vanjara families who are found in #Rajsthan, they all belong to the #Hindu Rajput family and in Gujrat too.
        5) Just go your #Google #Map and search Lubana #Pakistan, There are so many #villages on the name of Lubana Even in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan also.
6} Sikligarh, Bazigar are not Lubana as well as Banjaras.
        7) Lubana is a warrior race that belongs to rich and upper-class Rajput race.

        Bhai Mani Singh,
        Bhai Bachiter Singh,
        Baba Banda Singh Bhadur,
        Baba Makhan Shah Lubana ,
Baba Lakhi Shah Vanjara Etc they all are Rajput.

    2. In my opinion lovana are the mulniwasi people who were settled in lower Indus Area and had travelled to next river basin of Sumer. they lived in two civilizations in sumer and Indus and in those days the people in lower valley were quite expert in Marine transport.Kalki was one of the great warrior having expertise in maritime war. Muslims came up around 640AD and may have adopted Islam. But to follow Pir is not muslim tradition. All tribes in lower Indus and Sumer had PIr. Even today all these tribes are in Rajasthan , Gujarat and in west Pak with Pirs. To say Lovana follow Pir and may have adopted Islam is wrong. Mulniwasi rarely changes one’s lifestyle. In fact all religions of equality are from mulniwasi humanity. All guess work in comments does not convey any reality.

  13. Hello I am Harjit singh from ropar I feel very proud to be a labana but in our distt people aren’t know about labana caste. They says whose labana or labanae

  14. I am going to share my thoughts on this what
I think we are heading in wrong direction because now days everything is political and everything is strategy i.e community’s
Name and fame depends on the population and how much political back you have for eg in Punjab jatts are in majority also they hold maximum lands , they control over administration and have good sound political force and they are promoting there own people. simmilarly as in Rajasthan rajputs have dominance.
So we are in minority in a way comparatively negligible.
As we have no or very little political say i.e we have only one representative and this time she lost yes I am talking about Bibi jagir Kaur and again now she has become puppet in badals hand for our community vote.
Moreover in Sikhism there is no concept of casteism but nowdays people have started
Putting there surnames and also in gurudwaras all Karam kands are been followed and SGPC is merely a spectator.
We are marching back to bramanwad same to say as jattwad is introduced and it is a strategy to make one community think that they are more superior than others as it’s going in Punjab today and jatts are happily accepted this idea.
I don’t know who is maintaining this site but what you have mentioned is history of labanas few hundred years ago but what before that . What were they before that and no body can deny the fact that you were rajputs even I have some rajputs friends whom I can associate very easily.yours are the suryavanshi lineage. even this you can check on labanasamaj.com whom recently called Bibi jagir Kaur and you can check pics by going on the same site .there you can check your clans history also like ajrawat, pelia but you won’t find all clans and as I can reckon as originals clans we’re changed in course of time.
I know we are very proud people that’s because we have same royal rajputs blood running in our veins ,you can’t part from them and they accept this thing, only we have to bridge a little gap. I say we must also revert back to our roots ,as Sikhism is the thing of past and it’s been corrupted fully.
I personally knew some Hindu labana friends and they call that there ancestors are rajputs. Rajputs are well known ,they are everywhere, they have good political representation. You are unpopular because you are few. Its time to think wisely.I am sure jatts are looking to spread beyond the boundaries i.e haryana, Rajasthan .so we need to know that it’s all carefully thought planned strategy.
Further more Punjab has lost it’s all reputation.now people all over world know that it’s youth is addicted, jatt farmers are committing suicide, farmers debts, unemployment,it has lost all it’s shine to the extent that it is not considered as brave as it used to be.

      1. Hindu Lubanas are not different from Sikh Lubanas. Our Gotras are same. Like I am Pelia but Pelias write Palia in Maharashtra and MP. So I also use Palia because when my father joined Indian Airforce, the clerk/sergeant who was Naik or Nayk from Maharashtra wrote my father’s surname as Palia instead of Pelia because he himself was a Lubana and knew Palia sub caste. When my father insisted he is Pelia, the Sergeant asked him if he was Lubana. My father said yes. Then the sergeant forced Palia on my father’s last name saying that that was the correct spellings. My father had to accept that since he was afraid being a teenager cadet. So our family became Palias since then. I came to know later on that Palia sub caste is there everywhere including Gujarat, Maharashtra, MP, UP and Himachal Pardesh and they are all Hindu Lubanas. Similarly, there are many other common surnames like Ajrawat. Baba Makhan Shah Lubana was a Pelia from Kathiawad, Gujarat. Thanks

  15. We should think in broader sense . don’t say that we are upper or they lower infact Sikhism considers everyone equal.

  16. I am Ranjit Ghotra living in USA. I am good to be Lobana. It is a community of respected people.

  17. I think everybody is going on wrong way… If we want to promote our caste then we need to do something special.. Encourage our children for Sports, Talent, Education and Politics so that we don’t need to address ourselves… Har koi apne ap he janega… And GOTRA nal use karya Karo name de nal

My self RESHAM SINGH from Spain
And i am proud to be part of wonderful community

  19. Why is the history of or community shrouded In such mystery? I mean there are like 3-4 different origin theories on the Lubana community. In my opinion I believe the lubana community is a collective of merchant trading indian tribes that at one point decided to intermarry and form a new identity. Such as rajputs, Banjaras, Gujjars and various others etc. I am a proud gujjar lubana nonetheless and my ancestors came from Sargodha

  20. Hi I am Dr. Madan Lal Lobana from Himachal Pradesh and proud to be the part of lobana community

  21. Can anybody confirm Badalia is lubana surname or not?
Badalia people are settled in dasuya jalandhar

  22. Mai share lubana brother nu appeal karda ha k aao sab mil k internationl lubana chetna lahar manch banyea.ta k dunya nu dasya ja sake lubane kaun me.second sab lubane apne naam nal apni goter jaroor likho.Register karo.

  23. The history of the “Lubana” community has been very suppressed and oppressed by todays Kathavachaks and so called Giani’s who claim this community to be merely just Lubana. I am from Rajasthan, and our family still lives in Rajasthan, we are 100% Rajput as we are from Rathore and Chauhan clan. They are being associated otherwise or separated from the Rajput clan, because all other clans are afraid that they will rise to power. There is solid proof from history, and history of the surnames from whom the so called Lubana community comes from. Their origin and blood is Rajput. They are fierce warriors and they were fierce rulers! Today some Lubana’s in Punjab, do not use the clan of origin name, and its been nearly 100 years or more, due to the British India, segregating and dividing the Rajput community. The Lubana community itself is the Rajput community! Lubana community actually till this day still possesses some of traditions of the Rajput community, such as Sati, the wearing of jewelry and some Lubana’s who wear excess jewelry. They are very wealthy, they have a very open lifestyle!

    Long live the Rajput community!
We are the same! Don’t let people fool you!

    Long Live the Rajput community!

  24. Hello, I Davinder Singh Palia from Puranpur, Uttar Pardesh and now in Canada I proud to be from Lubana family.

    1. Nobody asked to remove Singh or Kaur and no body askeed to use Lubana surnames….. kindly read all the posts, if you find anything objectnalbe report it. Its about histroy of Lubana people and where are they upto today… kindly clear your facts, Thanks

    2. Actually Lubanas rarely use their surname, gotra or sub caste unlike Jatts who always want to show their got (ਗੋਤ) to feel proud of being jatts. That’s why jatt surnames are more popular than any other sikh cast.
Lubanas mostly use Singh or Kaur as their last name. Resultantly, Lubana surnames ate not popular. At this platform, we just share different Lubanas surnames just to enhance the knowledge and not for the purpose of show off.
But you are not wrong to advocate Singh and Kaur surnames. I fully agree to your view. Of course we have started using our surnames in recent times due to immigration requirements of different countries.
      ਧੰਨਵਾਦ

    1. Lubanas are Other Backward Class or OBC. The word OTHER is used for the casts which are actually not backward class but just for the purpose of giving reservation benefits in Indian system. That means we are not part of the main backward class category and our OBC status can be withdrawn any time when the govt feels that we are already well up and don’t need the support any more. Actually, Lubanas are known to be much more big heart people than any other Sikh community in the world.
